Mentoring Opportunities

MACH Partners run a variety of mentoring programs aimed at supporting and developing the careers of early and mid-career researchers and clinicians. See the table below for details of programs currently available. Please note that programs may be available to internal staff or students only.

Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Institute	PhD student mentorship	New PhD students paired with a senior post-doc mentor in area separate to their work group – the mentor becomes a champion for the PhD student. Non-clinician PhD students also matched with a clinician to add context to research focus. The program is open to Scientist PhDs and to Clinician PhDs at ONJCRI. Most are enrolled through La Trobe University School of Cancer Medicine with a few through The University of Melbourne Dept of Medicine	[email protected]

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre	Junior (PhD)/senior post-doc mentor program	PhD student selects their own mentor or choose from a circulated bio list, meetings are self-organised. Mentor is external to the lab’s immediate research group and independent of the project and supervisory team. Mentor must not be in a position to be pressured by the supervisors in case of involvement in any conflict resolution. Mentor attends all progress review meetings	[email protected]

	The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS) Mentoring Program	The program connects final year students of selected MDHS courses, with an experienced graduate of their chosen study area.	[email protected]
	Melbourne Medical School – Department of Surgery	Identifies and fosters young surgeons who are considering a career in academic surgery. Each mentoring cycle lasts for one year and matches a younger surgeon with a suitable mentor	[email protected]
Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre	VCCC Alliance Clinical Trials Mentoring Program	Brings together mid and senior-level clinical trials staff to encourage career development, knowledge exchange, and leadership skills.	[email protected]
WEHI	Undergraduate mentoring program	Group mentoring / networking sessions for undergraduates working at WEHI to encourage contact with wider group of WEHI researchers. Sessions are organised and hosted by PhD student volunteers (Education interns)	[email protected] [email protected]
	Honours mentoring program	Group mentoring session 3-6 honours students are paired with a PhD student mentor. Pairing of mentors and mentees and hosting of sessions is organised by PhD student volunteers (Education interns)	[email protected] [email protected]
	PhD peer-to-peer mentoring program	All incoming PhD and graduate research students are invited to the program. It consists of groups of 3 students: 2 first year PhD or grad research students and a later stage PhD student. 	Student-Post-doc mentoring program	30-minute Q&A sessions provide an opportunity to chat to a WEHI postdoctoral fellow about their career and mentoring relationships. These sessions are open to all WEHI PhD students.	[email protected] [email protected]
	Postdoctoral mentoring program	Mentors will be located internally e.g., laboratory heads or externally including industry mentors. This is a 1:1 mentor: mentee pairing, the mentee is responsible for organising sessions with their mentor.	[email protected] [email protected]
	Clinician PhD/MPhil mentoring program	New clinician PhD pr MPhil students are paired with a more senior clinician PhD student or clinician postdoctoral fellow. 	Clinician mentoring program	All clinicians at WEHI (e.g., MD students working at WEHI or postdoctoral clinicians) can be paired 1:1 with a more senior clinician if requested. 	Clinician-student peer support program	Group sessions for all clinician students to share experiences and advice. A more senior clinician (Lab head, or Division head) is present for Q&A and providing career advice. This is a clinician only peer support program.	[email protected] [email protected]
