The need for physiotherapy in acute hospital care exceeds available resources. Prioritisation tools guide decision-making on resource utilisation but have received limited review in the past decade.

The FOMO project aims to co-design a contemporary prioritisation tool with key stakeholders, considering complexity and equity, and evaluate its feasibility within one acute inpatient physiotherapy team, guided by the PRISM framework. Prospective impacts include dynamic data-driven prioritisation, equitable resource allocation based on high-value care markers, consistent decision-making, improved workload safety, monitoring, enhanced patient flow and high-value care provision.

The tool re-design lays the foundation for future referral management and resource allocation workflows with electronic medical records. The knowledge gained will be highly relevant and generalisable within and beyond the hospital.

MacHSR offers opportunities to develop research capacity, drive long-term practice change, optimise methodology and sustainability through mentorship, and engage with Fellows to understand prioritisation and workload tools across services, expanding the project’s reach.
