Prolonged preoperative fasting in children is a preventable issue linked to avoidable harm such as distress and dehydration. My project aims to reduce fasting-related complications by identifying system barriers, standardising practice and strengthening nursing confidence through education and workflow improvements. By engaging key stakeholders, this project aims to improve safety and patient experience, ensuring families’ experiences are heard and help shape identified solutions. This initiative will improve fasting practices at RCH and influence state-wide paediatric perioperative care.

My project will contribute to safer, more patient-centred care by supporting nurses and clinicians with the skills and tools needed to escalate fasting care effectively at RCH. MacHSR will strengthen my capabilities and skills in health services research and implementation science, enabling me to drive meaningful, evidence-based change. Through expert mentorship and structured learning, I will be better equipped to lead projects that improve perioperative nursing care practices.
