The use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in conducting clinical trials is on the rise, and existing literature highlights its advantages. One key application of EMR is the embedding of clinical trials within its system, which aims to incorporate the conduct of these trials seamlessly into the everyday workflow of clinicians. To assess the applicability of this approach in the Australian healthcare context, we conducted a feasibility study using a phosphate replacement study as a model in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The results demonstrated that embedding clinical trials into EMR is feasible and can lead to significant operational and clinical outcomes. However, we also identified limitations associated with EMR that this project aims to address. Our goal is to optimize EMR further and explore advanced tools to accelerate the conduct of clinical trials.
