BIOChildren with a severe neurological impairment (SNI) require high level specialist care at home. The burden of care can lead to carer burnout and poor health outcomes for children and families. Children with SNI are eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme which funds varied disability care, including respite. Resource allocation, expenditure, provision of care, and family experience is poorly understood. Anecdotal evidence suggests there is inequity in respite resource allocation and service provision, placing vulnerable children and families at risk of poor health outcomes. This doctorate aims to understand the current state, benefits and challenges of respite care for children with SNI in Australia.
